It has been one heck of a long, cold winter.. Whether you refer to it as the Polar Vortex, the Siberian Express or just wicked cold,  the result is the same.. the northeast has been in the middle of a major freeze and Northern Maine is in the midst of the coldest February in History! With another storm predicted for this weekend, I figured.. why not share a little pattern love! So Hunker down with some chunky yarn and a big fat crochet hook! My Bulky Crochet Hat Pattern is free for a limited time! 1 skein bulky weight yarn, I prefer Lion Brand thick and quick
Size J or K crochet hook,
Button and needle and thread if desired

Stitch abbreviations:
Hdc – half double crochet
Dc – double crochet
Sl st – slip stitch
Ch – chain
This hat is one size fits most. If you desire to make the hat larger, the easiest way is to add length at the end. you may also add a row of the v-stitch pattern. I find that if to many increases are made at the beginning, the hat becomes very large very quickly! The V-Stitch makes the hat super stretchy and I find it really does fit most
people as it is written
chain 5 and join to make circle

ch 2 in circle space, 9 hdc in circle space (10 stitches) join with sl st at top of ch1 yarn tight to shrink up the circle

row 1 : ch 2, hdc in same st as ch * 2 hdc in each hdc around, sl st to join ( 20 st)

row 2 : ch 1, 2hdc in next st * hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next around, hdc in last st, sl st to join (30 st)

row 3: ch 1, sc in next st, 2sc in next *sc, sc, 2sc around, sl st to join (40 st)

this is the end of the increase rounds. by this time, the hat should measure about 6-6.5 inches when measured across the front. As long as it is close it shouldn’t matter too much, this hat becomes very stretchy as the split v-stitch rounds progress.
